2024-25 funding will target those teachers and leaders who work in the most challenging schools or educational settings, serving more disadvantaged communities.
Here are the changes in full:
*Funding models have yet to be confirmed by the DfE for future cohorts. We will update this information as soon as we are able to do so.
We can facilitate any school in our Teaching School Hub area. If the local Teaching School Hub is not offering a particular NPQ, we can also support other Hub regions; as a Hub, we have increased our capacity to develop current and future leaders across the region.
Where cohort sizes allow us, we are keen to support the provision of NPQs locally and make them more accessible to colleagues in North Warwickshire, East Staffordshire, Cannock, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Tamworth and Lichfield.
We are excited by the opportunity of developing partnerships and supporting the facilitation of local networking within districts and across the Teaching School Hub region.
Teachers and school leaders at all state schools in England, including Post-16 organisations, are now entitled to fully funded places.
Access to funding remains conditional on the successful validation of a participant’s registration information against Teaching Regulation Agency records, so you must ensure that the information supplied to your NPQ provider matches your teacher record. You can check and update your teacher record via the Teacher Self-Service Portal.
If you are not eligible for scholarship funding (e.g. if you work in an Independent school) but are still interested in undertaking an NPQ, contact us for support and additional information.
As part of the work done to support Covid recovery, DfE funding had meant that all NPQs were fully funded. This will no longer be the case.
It has now been confirmed that funding will target those teachers and leaders who work in the most challenging schools or educational settings, serving more disadvantaged communities.

The National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) are an accredited suite of qualifications that equip teachers with the expertise to lead sustainable improvement across their schools. NPQs are underpinned by the latest evidence of what works in schools and a key component of the DfE’s ‘Golden Thread’ of high- quality professional development for teachers and school leaders.
The John Taylor Teaching School Hub are delivering nine of Ambition Institute’s NPQ programmes, including 4 specialist and 4 leadership NPQs.
Leading Teaching (NPQLT)
For teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, key stage, or phase.
Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD)
For teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers in their school.
Leading Behaviour & Culture (NPQLBC)
For teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading behaviour and/or supporting pupil wellbeing in their school.
NPQ Leading Literacy (NPQLL)
For teachers who are leading, or aspire to lead, literacy in any phase of education at a school or Trust level.
For teachers who lead or aspire to lead Maths in a Primary School, learning how to embed mastery teaching in their school.
Senior Leadership (NPQSL)
For school leaders who are, or aspiring to be, a senior leader with cross-school responsibilities.
For school leaders who are, or aspiring to be, a headteacher or head of school with responsibility for leading a school.
For new headteachers, within the first five years of headship who have either already completed the NPQH or are now undertaking the revised NPQH.
NPQSENCO
This new course replaces the NASENCO qualification and is the mandatory qualification for SENCOs from September 2024. Participants become an expert leader of SEN and learn how to build an inclusive culture where all pupils can succeed.
Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL)
For Level 3 qualified Early Years practitioners currently, or aspiring to manage Early Years Settings (Private, Voluntary, or Independent), an EYFS leader in a state funded school, a headteacher of school-based or maintained EY settings, or a childminder with leadership responsibilities.
Ambition Institute offer the NPQ in Executive Leadership (NPQEL) as a national cohort.
Executive Leadership (NPQEL)
For school leaders who are, or aspiring to be, an executive headteacher or have a school trust CEO role with responsibility for leading several schools.
We commence delivery of the new NPQ for SENCOs from October 2024.
Expressions of interest are being collected currently, so please email Jeanette Taylor-Perks on [email protected] if you are interested in this qualification.
From September 2024, the National Professional Qualification (NPQ) will be the mandatory qualification for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators, (SENCos), replacing the previous NASENCO qualification. The National Professional Qualification (NPQ) for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCos), is designed for experienced teachers and leaders who are seeking to develop their expertise in leading special educational needs and disability (SEND) provisions in their school, or to become a SENCo. This is an 18-month programme starting in October 2024.
Considerations for schools and current SENCos
• Current SENCos with NASENCO are exempt but must ensure training completion is within three years of appointment.
• SENCos appointed before September 2009 are exempt from the NPQ for SENCos but must ensure regulatory compliance.
• Those already enrolled in NASENCO can continue until the 2023-2024 academic year’s end. However, those starting NASENCO from 2023 to 2024 must complete it within three years of appointment or transition to an NPQ by Spring 2025.
• Aspiring SENCos must start NASENCO before September 2024 or enrol in an NPQ course by then.
We are extremely pleased that our facilitators, for all NPQs, are experienced Headteachers and Senior Leaders from across the Teaching School Hub and West Midlands region. They are all fully trained as Visiting Fellows by Ambition Institute on the specialist and reformed leadership NPQs offering the quality and experience delegates expect.
Our preferred model is for NPQs to be co-facilitated by leaders with primary and secondary experience and expertise to enhance the delegate experience and offer informed advice and guidance throughout. A detailed breakdown of each course curriculum, assessment and costs can be found here.
